Could two or more sperm cells reach and penetrate an egg at the exact same time?

August 4th, 2009 by admin

I mean, they’re tiny, and there are hundreds of sperm that make it past the barriers, so is it possible for two or more to reach the egg at the EXACT same time?

I know that once a sperm penetrates the egg it puts up a chemical barrrier so that no more sperm can penetrate it. But what if two penetrate at once?

If two were to penetrate at the same time, there would be way to much genetic information. I don’t believe the egg would develop normally and it would ultimately die and miscarry.
